What is Lorazepam (Ativan)?

Lorazepam belongs to the class of medications called benzodiazepines. It is used for the fast relief of the symptoms of the anxiety. This medication has an action that slows down communication between nerve cells in the brain (ie, the central nervous system).

Some people experience an improvement in their level of anxiety within 30 minutes after taking lorazepam. In injectable solution, lorazepam can be used as initial treatment in the control of successive epileptic seizures (status epilepticus).

How should this medication be used?

Against anxiety: The recommended starting dose of lorazepam for an adult is 2 mg daily. The dose is personalized according to your specific needs and your response to the medication. Your doctor may increase this dose until it reaches 6 mg per day taken in 2 to 4 divided doses.

If the route of administration of your tablets is sublingual, place the tablet under the tongue. The drug will melt in about 20 seconds. You should refrain from swallowing for at least 2 minutes so that the medication can be absorbed into the body.

Seizures: The injectable dose of lorazepam for seizures is based on body weight and given in a hospital setting by a trained health care provider.

There are several factors that can be considered in determining the dose a person needs: weight, health, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose other than those listed here, do not change the way you take the medicine without first consulting it.

It is important to use this medicine as directed by your doctor. If you have taken this medicine regularly, do not stop taking it without first talking to your doctor. A gradual dose reduction is recommended when stopping treatment to avoid withdrawal effects.

In which cases is this medicine not recommended?

Refrain from using lorazepam in the following circumstances:

is allergic to lorazepam, other drugs in the benzodiazepine family, or to any of the ingredients of the medication
acute angle-closure glaucoma;
Myasthenia gravis

fast, irregular heartbeat

salivation accumulates;
memory problems;
muscle spasms;
muscle weakness
nausea or vomiting
urinary problems;
rash
chills;
concealed brightening or bruising
an inexperienced excitement, a state of nervousness or irritability;
inexperienced fatigue or weakness;
yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin.
